EU Scrambles to Finalize US Trade Pact Ahead of Potential Political Shake-Up

1 min read

The European Union is accelerating efforts to strike a new trade agreement with the United States amid growing uncertainty about the outcome of the upcoming U.S. presidential election and increasing global economic headwinds. EU officials are working urgently to establish a framework that would lock in trade ties before potential political shifts disrupt negotiations.

Talks between the EU and the Biden administration have gained momentum in recent months, with both sides expressing interest in reducing tariffs, strengthening critical supply chains, and cooperating more closely on digital and green technologies. However, concerns are rising in Brussels over the possibility of a Trump return to the White House, which could derail current efforts and revive protectionist trade policies.

“We are hopeful for progress, but we’re also preparing for all scenarios,” said one senior EU trade official, speaking on condition of anonymity. “The stakes are high — this is about securing long-term stability for European exporters, especially in areas like automotive, agriculture, and digital services.”

European leaders are also watching closely for signs that the U.S. may impose new tariffs or withdraw from multilateral trade mechanisms if the political landscape in Washington changes. To prepare, the EU is reportedly drafting contingency plans that include bolstering intra-EU trade, pursuing deeper agreements with Asia and Latin America, and accelerating energy independence.

The urgency of the talks reflects broader anxieties about geopolitical fragmentation, inflation, and the aftershocks of the pandemic and war in Ukraine — all of which have highlighted Europe’s dependence on transatlantic economic ties.

A formal agreement is not expected before the U.S. election, but negotiators are aiming to reach a memorandum of understanding on key trade principles and digital cooperation before the end of 2025.
