TotalEnergies and SSE Partner to Launch EV Charging Network in the UK and Ireland

French oil giant TotalEnergies and UK-based power company SSE have announced a strategic partnership to launch an electric vehicle (EV) charging network named Source. This collaboration aims to accelerate the adoption of EVs by providing extensive high-power charging infrastructure across Britain and Ireland.

The Significance of the Partnership

The Source venture marks a significant step towards the green transition goals of the UK and Ireland. By developing a robust network of EV charging points, TotalEnergies and SSE are addressing one of the primary concerns of potential EV buyers: charging availability. This initiative not only supports individual EV owners but also encourages companies to transition to electric fleets.

Key Features of the Source Network

  1. High-Power Charging Points:
    • The Source network will feature approximately 3,000 high-power charging points, each capable of delivering 150kW or more.
    • These points will be distributed across 300 EV hubs, strategically located in key urban and suburban areas.
  2. Fast Charging Capability:
    • The use of direct current (DC) will enable these stations to fully charge an EV battery in up to one hour, significantly reducing charging times compared to alternating current (AC) chargers.
  3. Renewable Energy Supply:
    • Both TotalEnergies and SSE will ensure that the charging hubs are powered by renewable energy, further enhancing the sustainability of the EV ecosystem.

Current Developments and Future Plans

Many of the EV hubs are already under construction, with ongoing research and development for additional sites. This rapid deployment is crucial as the UK’s zero emissions vehicle (ZEV) law mandates that by 2030, 70% of new vans and 80% of new cars sold in Great Britain must be zero-emission, reaching 100% by 2035.

Detailed Insights into the Partnership

Enhancing the EV Infrastructure

The introduction of Source addresses a critical infrastructure gap. By providing fast, reliable charging options, TotalEnergies and SSE are making EVs more accessible and convenient for everyday use. This infrastructure boost is expected to increase EV adoption rates among both private users and corporate fleets.

Supporting Corporate EV Fleets

The availability of extensive charging networks can significantly impact corporate decisions to switch to EV fleets. Financial incentives, such as EV salary sacrifice schemes, could further encourage employees to opt for electric vehicles. This shift not only supports environmental goals but also aligns with corporate sustainability strategies.

Strategic Statements from TotalEnergies and SSE

Mathieu Soulas, Senior Vice President of New Mobilities at TotalEnergies, highlighted the company’s commitment: “TotalEnergies is proud to contribute to the development of electric mobility to decarbonize transportation in the UK and Ireland. This is a great opportunity to extend our network in Europe and stake out a key position as a reference high-power charging player.”

Neil Kirkby, Managing Director of Enterprise at SSE, emphasized the broader impact: “SSE is already playing a leading role in decarbonizing the UK and Ireland’s power system. Now this agreement will help accelerate progress towards a decarbonized transport system too, ensuring the vehicles that keep the economy moving can do so in a more sustainable and efficient way.”

TotalEnergies and SSE’s Broader Renewable Energy Initiatives

Beyond the Source venture, TotalEnergies and SSE are deeply invested in renewable energy projects. They are collaborating on Seagreen, Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm. Additionally, TotalEnergies is advancing offshore wind energy projects in Germany’s Baltic Sea and North Sea, aiming to supply over 3 million homes with clean energy.
