Danish officials have warned that U.S. President Donald Trump’s interest in purchasing Greenland — which sparked diplomatic tensions in 2019 — may not be a closed chapter, especially if Trump returns to the White House.

In recent comments, Danish lawmakers and analysts expressed concern that Trump’s geopolitical ambitions regarding the semi-autonomous Arctic territory could resurface, reigniting a sensitive issue for Denmark. “This is not over and done with,” one senior official said, pointing to Greenland’s strategic value and growing interest from global powers, including the U.S., China, and Russia.

Trump’s previous suggestion to buy Greenland was met with firm rejection by both Denmark and Greenlandic leaders, who emphasized the island is not for sale. Nonetheless, Denmark remains vigilant about any renewed U.S. pressure, particularly amid heightened global competition in the Arctic.

Officials said they are preparing for all scenarios and stressed the importance of reinforcing diplomatic ties with both Greenland and key NATO allies.
