A Ukrainian drone strike ignited a massive fire at an oil depot in the Russian resort city of Sochi, local officials confirmed on Sunday. The attack, part of Kyiv’s escalating campaign targeting Russia’s energy infrastructure, sent thick plumes of smoke into the sky and prompted emergency crews to battle the blaze for hours.
Regional governor Alexey Kopaygorodsky reported that no casualties were recorded and that firefighters managed to contain the flames before they spread to adjacent facilities. Videos circulating on social media showed explosions and large columns of fire lighting up the night sky near the Black Sea coast.
The strike is the latest in a series of Ukrainian attacks aimed at disrupting Russia’s oil supply lines and logistics. Ukrainian officials have not publicly claimed responsibility but have previously said such operations are intended to undermine Moscow’s war effort.
Russian authorities said they were assessing the extent of the damage while vowing to bolster air defenses in the region. The incident underscores the widening reach of the conflict, as strikes increasingly target infrastructure deep inside Russia’s territory.
