The leadership of the prestigious Arab World Institute has shifted, with Anne-Claire Legendre stepping into the role of director. This change follows the resignation of former culture minister Jack Lang, whose name recently emerged in connection with the Jeffrey Epstein affair. Legendre’s appointment received unanimous approval from the IMA’s board of directors, a decision presented by foreign minister Jean-Noël Barrot.

Legendre brings a substantial diplomatic background to her new position. A career diplomat, she has served in various French embassies, including postings in Kuwait and Yemen, and spent more than two years as the spokesperson for the foreign ministry. Notably, her tenure working alongside Emmanuel Macron included involvement in France’s recent recognition of the State of Palestine, indicating a familiarity with complex international relations and regional dynamics. Her diverse experience positions her to navigate the cultural and political sensitivities inherent in leading an institution dedicated to fostering understanding between France and the Arab world.

Jack Lang, who had led the institute for an extended period, publicly welcomed his successor’s appointment. He described Legendre’s nomination as “excellent news” on the social network X, commending her as “a figure of great intellectual calibre, who has always backed the work of the Arab World Institute.” This public endorsement from the outgoing director suggests a smooth transition, despite the circumstances surrounding his departure.

Lang’s resignation came ten days prior to Legendre’s nomination, coinciding with the resurfacing of his name in relation to the Epstein scandal. Authorities are now seeking answers from the former culture minister regarding his connections, including financial ties, to Jeffrey Epstein. This development places Lang under scrutiny, particularly concerning an investigation into aggravated laundering of the proceeds of tax fraud.

Further details emerging from the ongoing inquiry reveal that Lang’s daughter, Caroline Lang, established an offshore company in 2016. This entity, registered in the US Virgin Islands, was reportedly set up in conjunction with the American businessman, Jeffrey Epstein, who had a criminal record. Both Jack and Caroline Lang are currently subjects of the investigation, which aims to clarify the nature and extent of their financial dealings and affiliations. These legal proceedings cast a long shadow over Lang’s legacy, even as his successor prepares to take the helm at the Arab World Institute.
