European Wine Could Miss Out in U.S. Trade Pact, Industry Says

1 min read

A key European industry lobby has raised alarms that European wine could be excluded from a forthcoming trade agreement with the United States, potentially putting billions in exports at risk.

The warning comes from the European Committee of Wine Companies (CEEV), which represents major producers across France, Italy, Spain, and other winemaking nations. According to the group, early drafts of the trade deal do not include robust provisions for wine market access or protections for geographical indications (GIs)—a cornerstone of EU agricultural exports.

“This is a worrying signal,” said a CEEV spokesperson. “Wine is not just an economic asset; it’s a cultural symbol. Excluding it from the deal would be a major setback for transatlantic cooperation.”

The U.S. is one of the EU’s largest wine export markets, accounting for over €4 billion in annual trade. Any exclusion or dilution of terms could lead to tariffs, regulatory mismatches, or a loss of competitive edge for European producers. At the same time, U.S. winemakers have long pushed for greater access to the EU market and less restrictive labeling rules—making wine a contentious issue in past trade talks.

Negotiators in Brussels and Washington have not publicly confirmed the wine sector’s status in the deal, but observers say it could become a sticking point as talks advance.

European officials have vowed to defend the sector’s interests, but with geopolitical concerns and broader trade priorities dominating the agenda, wine may be left on the sidelines—to the dismay of some of Europe’s most powerful agricultural economies.

As negotiations continue, the question lingers: Will European wine be part of the toast, or left out of the glass?
