UAE Hospitals Report Surge in Heatstroke and Dehydration Cases Amid Record-Breaking Temperatures

Dubai, May 30, 2025 — Hospitals and clinics across the United Arab Emirates are witnessing a significant increase in heat-related illnesses as the country grapples with unprecedented temperatures. On May 24, the UAE recorded a scorching 51.6°C in Sweihan, Al Ain, marking one of the highest temperatures ever documented in the nation.

Rising Health Concerns

Medical professionals report a notable uptick in cases of heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heatstroke. Dr. Karthikeyan Chinniah, Consultant Emergency Medicine at Lifecare Hospital Musaffah, noted, “We are slowly seeing more patients with heat exhaustion coming to the hospital, mostly those working in hot environments. Even working in shaded areas during this heatwave can cause harm”.

Similarly, Dr. Jyoti Upadhyay, Specialist Internal Medicine at Aster Hospital Mankhool, stated, “With temperatures climbing, our hospital has seen a notable increase in patients experiencing heat exhaustion, dehydration, sunburns, and, in more severe cases, heatstroke. Most of these could be prevented with proper hydration, sun protection, and timely rest in cooler environments”.

Vulnerable Populations at Risk

The extreme heat poses significant risks, particularly to outdoor workers, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. Prolonged exposure without adequate hydration and rest can lead to severe health complications.

Preventative Measures and Public Advisories

In response to the soaring temperatures, health authorities advise residents to:

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
Avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours (12 PM to 3 PM).
Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
Use sun protection, including hats and sunscreen.
Seek immediate medical attention if experiencing symptoms like dizziness, nausea, or excessive sweating.
