Understanding Emirati Culture: What Tourists Should Know

Dubai is a global city — modern, cosmopolitan, and home to people from more than 200 nationalities. But at its heart, it remains deeply rooted in the traditions and values of the Emirati culture, which is guided by Islamic principles, hospitality, and respect. For tourists, understanding these cultural elements can enhance your trip and ensure a more meaningful and respectful experience.

Here’s what every visitor should know to better connect with the local culture and avoid cultural misunderstandings.

🕌 1. Islam Is at the Core of Emirati Life

Islam plays a central role in daily life in the UAE. You’ll hear the call to prayer (adhan) five times a day, and many locals pause their activities during these times. Tourists are not required to participate, but showing respect — especially near mosques or religious sites — is important.

Tip: Avoid loud music or disruptive behavior near mosques, and never enter a mosque without permission unless it’s open to the public (like the Jumeirah Mosque).

👗 2. Dress Modestly in Public Spaces

While Dubai is more liberal than many parts of the region, modesty is still appreciated, especially in public areas like malls, souks, government buildings, and heritage sites.

What this means:

  • Avoid see-through or very short clothing.
  • Women are not required to cover their hair (except in mosques), but shoulders and knees should be covered in more traditional areas.
  • Swimwear is acceptable at pools, beaches, and resorts — but not in public areas like metro stations or malls.

💬 3. Respect and Politeness Go a Long Way

The Emirati people are known for their warm hospitality. Simple greetings like “Salam Alaikum” (Peace be upon you) or “Shukran” (Thank you) are appreciated.

Avoid:

  • Public displays of affection (especially kissing and hugging).
  • Loud arguments or aggressive behavior — public disrespect is taken seriously.
  • Pointing with your finger or showing the soles of your feet, which can be seen as disrespectful.

📆 4. Be Aware of Religious & Cultural Holidays

During Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. Tourists are welcome during this time but should avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours. Many restaurants remain open with special arrangements for non-Muslims, and after sunset, the city comes alive with traditional meals called Iftar.

Tip: Visiting during Ramadan offers a beautiful glimpse into Emirati faith, charity, and community traditions.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 5. Family and Tradition Are Strong Pillars

Family is highly valued in Emirati culture, and traditional values are respected across generations. It’s common to see large families gathering in parks, malls, and at the beach.

Visitors should:

  • Avoid taking photos of locals (especially women and children) without permission.
  • Show courtesy in family-oriented spaces.
  • Understand that traditional roles and customs are cherished parts of everyday life.

🐪 6. Embrace Local Experiences

From Majlis seating to Arabic coffee (Gahwa), camel rides, henna art, and falconry, Emirati culture is rich with hospitality and heritage. Participating in these traditions — especially at desert camps or cultural centers — is encouraged and creates meaningful memories.

Dubai offers a perfect blend of modern luxury and ancient tradition. By showing cultural awareness and respect, tourists can enjoy a deeper connection to the UAE’s rich heritage and values — making their trip truly unforgettable.
