The European Union and China are set to meet in Beijing this week for a scaled-back summit, with trade tensions and economic cooperation high on the agenda. The summit comes amid growing EU concerns over market imbalances, industrial overcapacity, and what European leaders see as unfair trade practices by Beijing.

Top EU officials will raise issues including Chinese subsidies for electric vehicles and other green technologies, which Brussels argues are distorting global competition. The bloc is also expected to press for better market access for European firms operating in China and more balanced economic ties.

While the summit lacks the full diplomatic fanfare of previous years, it underscores the strategic importance both sides continue to place on maintaining dialogue. For China, strengthening ties with the EU is increasingly vital as relations with the U.S. remain tense. For the EU, addressing trade asymmetries without jeopardizing broader cooperation will be a delicate balancing act.

Observers say the outcome of the talks could shape the tone of EU-China economic relations for the next several years, especially as both sides grapple with slowing growth, global supply chain shifts, and an evolving geopolitical landscape.
