The capital city of Ukraine experienced a significant aerial assault this past Saturday, resulting in one fatality and numerous injuries. This extensive barrage of missiles and drones struck Kyiv just a day before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump. The attacks, which reportedly lasted nearly ten hours, impacted both industrial and residential areas across multiple districts of the city.

Early reports indicated at least 22 individuals sustained injuries, among them two children. The scale of the damage became apparent as emergency services responded to numerous incidents, including fires that erupted in residential buildings. An 18-story structure in the Dnipro district caught fire, as did a 24-story residential building in the Darnytsia district. Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s City Military Administration, confirmed the discovery of a body beneath the rubble of one damaged building via a statement on Telegram. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko added that over ten residential buildings were damaged, necessitating evacuations as rescue teams worked to extricate people from collapsed structures.

The widespread nature of the assault also led to significant power outages, affecting more than 4,000 residential buildings, which accounts for roughly one-third of the capital’s electricity supply. Zelenskyy later stated that Russia had targeted Ukraine with approximately 500 drones and 40 missiles of various types, primarily focusing on energy and civilian infrastructure in Kyiv. He noted that some districts within the region were left without electricity or heating in the wake of these strikes.

This latest offensive unfolds as Zelenskyy prepares for discussions with Trump in Florida, a meeting intended to address ongoing efforts to conclude Russia’s nearly four-year full-scale invasion. Zelenskyy has publicly indicated that the meeting will cover critical aspects of the conflict, including security guarantees and territorial disputes concerning the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions. His remarks on Telegram underscored the stark reality of the situation, stating, “There have been many questions these days. Where is the Russian response to the proposals to end the war, which were made by the United States and the world? Russian representatives hold long talks; in reality, the ‘Kinzal’ (missiles) and ‘Shaheds’ (drones) speak for them.”

The Ukrainian president had previously suggested on Tuesday that Ukraine might consider withdrawing troops from the eastern industrial heartland as part of a potential peace plan. Such a plan would hinge on Russia also pulling back its forces, leading to the establishment of a demilitarized zone under international monitoring. However, Russia has yet to signal any willingness to relinquish the territories it currently occupies, leaving the path to de-escalation uncertain. The timing of Saturday’s attacks, preceding high-level diplomatic talks, highlights the persistent and volatile nature of the conflict.
