Residential areas in Ukraine’s eastern Kharkiv region and the southern city of Zaporizhzhia experienced renewed Russian strikes overnight, resulting in injuries to at least 23 individuals. Among the wounded in Kharkiv was a seven-year-old boy, as missiles and drones targeted various districts, leaving apartment buildings and local infrastructure damaged. Emergency services were dispatched to manage fires and clear debris across the affected areas of the city.
Further south, Zaporizhzhia also faced significant damage from the same wave of assaults. Officials there reported injuries to at least nine people. The wide-ranging impact included damage to 19 apartment blocks, numerous private homes, and two shopping centers. Additionally, approximately 500 homes temporarily lost heating services due to infrastructure damage. Rescue teams worked through the night in both cities, extinguishing blazes and assisting residents who found themselves trapped amidst the destruction.
Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept a portion of the incoming attacks, but the widespread damage to civilian infrastructure indicates that a significant number of projectiles reached their targets. The consistent targeting of residential zones has been a recurring feature of these overnight assaults, raising concerns about civilian safety and the ongoing humanitarian impact. The scale of damage necessitates continuous efforts from local authorities and aid organizations to support affected communities.
Despite the intensity of the strikes in Zaporizhzhia, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) remained unaffected. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that the situation at the plant is stable and continues to be monitored. This assurance comes amidst ongoing vigilance regarding the safety of nuclear facilities in conflict zones. The absence of any reported radiation increase at the ZNPP provides a measure of relief, contrasting sharply with the immediate devastation witnessed in the residential areas.
