Tensions in Eastern Europe flared once again as Russia launched a new wave of missile and drone strikes across Ukraine, just one day after former U.S. President Donald Trump issued a high-profile ultimatum demanding a peace deal be reached within 50 days if he is re-elected.
The strikes targeted major cities including Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odesa, damaging civilian infrastructure and causing multiple injuries, according to Ukrainian officials. Air raid sirens blared across the country as air defenses scrambled to intercept incoming projectiles.
Trump’s statement, made during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, vowed that if he returns to the White House, he would end the war in Ukraine “within 50 days” by negotiating directly with both Ukrainian and Russian leaders. While critics dismissed the claim as unrealistic, the timing of the Russian escalation has sparked renewed concern about the broader geopolitical stakes.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, stating that “once again, Moscow responds to diplomacy with violence,” and urged Western allies to accelerate military aid deliveries. Meanwhile, NATO officials reiterated their commitment to supporting Ukraine, warning that any signs of political instability or hesitation in the West could embolden further aggression from Moscow.
While the Kremlin did not officially comment on Trump’s ultimatum, Russian state media portrayed the strikes as part of ongoing “special military operation objectives,” continuing to frame Western support for Ukraine as an obstacle to peace.
