The warning from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived starkly on social media, indicating that intelligence pointed to Moscow having “readied missiles” for a significant assault. This projected attack, anticipated “within the next 48 hours,” prompted a direct appeal for citizens to remain vigilant and heed air raid alerts. The announcement comes on the heels of a particularly brutal period of strikes, underscoring the relentless nature of the conflict now in its third year.
Just days prior, Russian missile attacks had already inflicted substantial damage and casualties in the Kyiv region. Reports detailed at least ten fatalities and approximately one hundred injuries from these strikes, which reportedly targeted an arms exhibition where representatives of Ukraine’s defense industry were gathered. Further south, the city of Slovyansk also endured guided aerial bomb strikes, resulting in the deaths of five individuals. The Latvian consulate in Slovyansk sustained damage during these assaults, a detail confirmed by Latvia’s foreign minister. Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s top diplomat, condemned these actions, asserting on social media that the strike on the consulate demonstrated “Moscow’s utter disregard for international law.”
In response to the continued aggression, Ukrainian forces have not remained static. Zelenskyy affirmed that Ukrainian military operations included an overnight strike on a weapons facility in Kirov. Beyond this, targets broadened to encompass an oil refinery in Tyumen, a logistics facility in Yekaterinburg, and a fuel and lubricants depot situated in Rostov-on-Don. The Ukrainian president also highlighted what he described as “very strong results with long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea,” specifically mentioning vessels involved in military cargo shipments with Iran, alongside a warship. Video footage purporting to show the aftermath of some of these strikes was also shared. Amidst these retaliatory actions, Russian attacks persisted within Ukraine, with local authorities reporting one fatality and nine injuries in the southeastern region of Zaporizhzhia on Saturday.
The escalating military activity unfolds against a backdrop of ongoing, albeit fragile, diplomatic discussions. President Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with former US President Donald Trump in Washington in the coming week. This meeting forms part of broader efforts between the United States and Ukraine to explore potential peace proposals aimed at ending the war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Zelenskyy recently confirmed discussions with US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, describing the conversation as “good and important” for “energiz[ing] diplomacy and bring[ing] peace closer.”
Concurrently, high-level talks have also taken place between Russian and American officials. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met on the sidelines of the ASEAN foreign ministers’ summit in the Philippines. The Kremlin indicated that Lavrov used this opportunity to caution Washington against the continued sale of arms to Kyiv. A statement from the Russian foreign ministry noted that Lavrov “briefed his American counterpart on the actual situation along the front line and emphasised that it would be unacceptable to further arm the Kyiv regime.”
Secretary Rubio, speaking to reporters after the meeting, characterized the exchange as “good” and “frank” but declined to elaborate on the specifics. When pressed about the Kremlin’s statement regarding arms sales, Rubio clarified, “We sell arms via PURL, which is an initiative we have through NATO and that’s what we’re involved in. There’s been no change to our policy in that regard.” He concluded his remarks by stating, “We want a peace deal. We want the war to end,” reflecting a sentiment shared by many as the conflict shows little sign of abatement. These parallel tracks of intensified military action and cautious diplomatic engagement define the current complex phase of the war.
